I have noticed that some people try to put HTML and BBCode into the chat and it comes out as the code. I myself have tried this, and also \n for a new line. I move we add limited HTML, BBCode, and escape characters in chat.

<i></i> or [i][/i] = Italics
<u></u> or [u][/u] = Underline
<br> or \n = New Line
