The Rules: What 'should' they be?

The rules for XSketch are shown as follows...

General Rules

Do not use pornography avatars
Do not harrass people
Do not use hate language or avatars

Game Rules

You're not allowed to use letters, numbers or symbols.
You're not allowed to use nudity, violence, or hate symbols.

Over the past 9 months of playing the rules have evolved into what the 'community' accepts. Each month brings slightly new developments as to what is acceptable and what is cheating. Some of these acceptable rules involve the use of numbers, symbols, dashes, and other hints.

Acceptable rules now include...

* you may write the first letter AFTER you have used the first letter hint button.

* you may use dashes to indicate the number of letters in the word, or the number of words in a phrase.

* you may use certain symbols and numbers

and more recently the acceptance of sketching a picture for individual letters.

These rules deviate from the original pictionary rules quite a bit, but as a community they have become acceptable. New players though reading the Rules as posted on the rules page are becoming confused when they see long term players employing the above strategies.

So, up for discussion: What should the rules be? Should we go back to trying to sketch without so many hints? Should the use of so many hints be restricted to low point tables?
Any other thoughts?

Take away accepting sketching individual letters cuz thats lame....

An idea i like is to add a limit of guesses a player can take per draw
..maybe?

I agree with everything else and do hate hints...just say the word and i will "take care of it">:}

I think we need to update the present rules. Some changes are needed that's for sure.

I think rules that are created by players after a few months of experience are the rules that should be adopted.

Except for the individual letters drawing. Thats just cheating and getting off too easy.

i like the updates... its how we all play and still it doesnt always get the job done so its not like cheating but i AM totally against writing extra letters or letters before hinting!! its a pet peev

I really wish that "drawings must relate to your sketch clue" was a rule, but I know most of the powerful players would kill whoever suggested said rule because then their themes would be forbidden.

I be only a newbie here, but I think the rules are fairly ok as they are. Too strict inventing (or enforcing!) of rules is never good, IMO.

But "you may use certain symbols and numbers" is too vague. :-) Which symbols is that?

Individual letter-sketching needs to be allowed, as a last resort. There are so many words in the database that are near impossible to draw otherwise. And there are quite different degrees of professionalism on here, there are you who can draw and we who ... can't, and who need additional methods. ;-)

Besides, you're allowed to "cheat" and divide a word into subwords - of course. What's so bad about the subwords sometimes being only one letter long? Most *do* use "cat", "ion", "man", "rat" whenever those words are easily recognized as subwords, but where there are no such possibilities, I think individual letter-sketching is at least better than passing.

I do NOT think drawing objects for individual letters should be allowed. If you don't know what the word is, open a separate tab on your browser, and search for the word in google. It will only take 2 seconds. If players still don't get it then pass. It's annoying, and basically in my humble opinion is cheating.
I've even seen a player do it for door. That's just ridiculous and more appropriate in isketch perhaps.

Also, I find themes fun and enjoyable. There are plenty of tables, and usually when themes are used all players are made aware of it. It adds to the fun of xsketch. If certain players aren't happy with that, they should segregate themselves to another table. Like they do so anyway when they get annoyed and type rubbish in the chat box.

I think the rules need to be changed to allow symbols to be drawn, otherwise technically you could get banned for putting the dollar symbol on a bank or even trying to draw tilde by using its proper symbol. If this rule is to stay, I agree with Finder, that some sort of definition as to what is meant by symbol is needed :)
I also would like another rule to be added about purposefully donating points to another player by sitting away. The easiest method to prevent this would be to get rid of the sit away button but if this doesn’t happen then there should at least be a rule discouraging people from doing it.
Recently I have been trying to play using no hints and I found that most of the time no hints are needed. But there are certain words which are difficult to draw without breaking them up by writing out the dashes for the individual letters. I think for these words your one hint should be classed as those dashes and no other should be given. If there are words which are undrawable by using just one hint they should be posted on the forums and if no one can come up with a method of drawing them then they should be removed.
I think one of the main problems with giving so many hints at the start of the draw is that the more experienced players, who have seen a lot of the words before, can guess it from the dashes alone. This takes a lot of fun out of the game when not even a picture gets drawn.
A lot of people have recently starting drawing out individual letters instead of making any attempt to draw the word. I don’t think this technique should be allowed but I have resorted to it when drawing words which people have never heard of or can’t spell :)
One of the main problems with the rules as they stand is that there are some words which can’t be drawn by following them. So either some words need to be removed or the rules need to be changed or maybe a bit of both ;)
