The Rules: What 'should' they be?

The rules for XSketch are shown as follows...

General Rules

Do not use pornography avatars
Do not harrass people
Do not use hate language or avatars

Game Rules

You're not allowed to use letters, numbers or symbols.
You're not allowed to use nudity, violence, or hate symbols.

Over the past 9 months of playing the rules have evolved into what the 'community' accepts. Each month brings slightly new developments as to what is acceptable and what is cheating. Some of these acceptable rules involve the use of numbers, symbols, dashes, and other hints.

Acceptable rules now include...

* you may write the first letter AFTER you have used the first letter hint button.

* you may use dashes to indicate the number of letters in the word, or the number of words in a phrase.

* you may use certain symbols and numbers

and more recently the acceptance of sketching a picture for individual letters.

These rules deviate from the original pictionary rules quite a bit, but as a community they have become acceptable. New players though reading the Rules as posted on the rules page are becoming confused when they see long term players employing the above strategies.

So, up for discussion: What should the rules be? Should we go back to trying to sketch without so many hints? Should the use of so many hints be restricted to low point tables?
Any other thoughts?

Marice: "But Aaron!!! No more math in sketches????"

Hey, if that's what it means, then sure.
Not like it matters since I've not sketched properly in a few weeks.

We could adjust the rules about numbers and symbols.

As of theme draws. I love theme sketches. I don't think themes should be the problem since the job is still being done and the sketches are there to guess the word.

i am up for dashes, numbers and the first letter written but isn't the drawing the little pics that you can sub the first letter for kinda cheating.
also would the writing of the message in the drawing be illegal? most of the higher people but maybe just say someone says hi just as they are drawing maybe that should be illegal to unless they clear it
i wonder what people think about that?
and also i think i've said this before
but what about a quiz for new people about the rules so they probably won't cheat?
the people who are new are more likely to cheat because they wouldn't know what is appectable.

I think that Ryan was not thinking clearly when he wrote in the Rules no numbers or symbols. How else can u draw "number" or "tilde" or signify money without breaking his Rules? If no action is taken on this there will be an ever increasing difference between his Rules and what the community accepts, and much confusion among players. I have asked him in the past to change this Rule, but as yet have received no response. However we will continue to lobby him to change this, as there are far too many words that must be removed to comply with this Rule.
