Okay, so I'm getting mighty confused here. You all probably know I'm a stickler for rules, and I hate breaking them but lately I've been getting mixed signals.
You've probably seen someone before draw a symbol above a letter space to show what that letter is. Example: drawing three squiggly lines to represent a River, the letter R for that space. Over the past month or two, I've seen new players abusing it by doing every letter in their word that way, which is annoying. I've also seen it used sparingly or as a last resort by newbies and oldbies alike. Is it against the rules? Technically, probably yes. "You're not allowed to use letters, numbers or symbols." But to follow those to the letter (so to speak) we'd have to warn every time someone wrote a number or an # or &. We just have to ascertain whether or not drawing a River for R counts as a symbol. Either way, I think we could adapt. But I've heard people (no names), some of them very respected players, express their distaste for people doing that. Depending on who's in the room, one could be warned or even yelled at for using those symbols inside of words. I think we should really talk about this and voice our opinions so that we can come to a consensus whether or not we should do this and if we should warn for it. Please tell me what you think and if it's okay or not okay... :) > My opinion: I think it is okay as a last resort or to be used very infrequently... not like some people who spell out, for example, "car" as "cat, apple, tree." I mean, really. |

at 8:07 PM, Monday June 7, 2010 EDT it is against the rules, and it is annoying Jade. Sorry, without mature mods at the tables you're fighting a losing battle. One I'm sick of fighting.

By the same line of thinking that places River for R in the wrong, it should implicate things such as sectioning off a word and drawing a smaller picture, like: _ _ _ _ _ _ (OFFICE) but instead of drawing an office, you draw: ( _ _ _ ) ( _ _ _ ) and then an OFF switch and some ICE. By the same reasoning you're not drawing the whole word and you're drawing a symbol for a subgroup. Unless there's some other list of rules I don't know about, this can be interpreted that way as well. And if symbols such as # and & are no-no's, then drawing ( _ _ _ ) and a + / - is wrong too. + and - are symbols by the same token, as well as the breaking apart the word interpretation. Does it follow? |

The reason why is because there are no mods to this site anymore so what good are any rules at the moment |

at 2:47 AM, Tuesday June 8, 2010 EDT I think there is a key distinction between breaking down a word into sub-words and breaking it down to letters.
A symbol for a letter is writing and makes the game a word guessing one (rather than sketch guessing). I can imagine the reason people are choosing to yell as it's been put is as there is no other justice to be had. |

at 3:38 AM, Tuesday June 8, 2010 EDT I think symbols hurt gameplay and should not be used, ever. By symbols I mean umbrella for U, cat for C, etc.
On the other hand, using & for AND, $ on bills, 4 for FOR doesn't annoy me, but I can live without them should the community decide so. Neither does +- for ION, or a mint for MENT; as long as it comes after the sketcher tried to draw something first (aka after the hint button appears). If the round begins with dashes and ION and MINT and cON, then there's no draw and we just strive to come up with the fastest guess in the west. >> My opinion - a aummary: -NO hieros. -#, 4, & works for me, but I wouldn't miss them should they be banned. -No dashes or word mapping before you actually draw something. |
