Clarification of the rules (Vote please!)

Okay, so I'm getting mighty confused here. You all probably know I'm a stickler for rules, and I hate breaking them but lately I've been getting mixed signals.
You've probably seen someone before draw a symbol above a letter space to show what that letter is. Example: drawing three squiggly lines to represent a River, the letter R for that space. Over the past month or two, I've seen new players abusing it by doing every letter in their word that way, which is annoying. I've also seen it used sparingly or as a last resort by newbies and oldbies alike. Is it against the rules? Technically, probably yes. "You're not allowed to use letters, numbers or symbols." But to follow those to the letter (so to speak) we'd have to warn every time someone wrote a number or an # or &. We just have to ascertain whether or not drawing a River for R counts as a symbol. Either way, I think we could adapt. But I've heard people (no names), some of them very respected players, express their distaste for people doing that. Depending on who's in the room, one could be warned or even yelled at for using those symbols inside of words. I think we should really talk about this and voice our opinions so that we can come to a consensus whether or not we should do this and if we should warn for it. Please tell me what you think and if it's okay or not okay... :) > My opinion: I think it is okay as a last resort or to be used very infrequently... not like some people who spell out, for example, "car" as "cat, apple, tree." I mean, really. |

at 12:09 PM, Tuesday June 8, 2010 EDT Yeah, I think I agree more with disco now. PM had good insight, I had not thought of distinguishing this from a sketching game to a word guessing game... But I think I get it more now.

at 8:00 PM, Tuesday June 8, 2010 EDT I agree with Buaka and Disco and their followers, and these would be my standards:
-No hieros -#, 4, &, $ okay -Dashes/word mapping okay only after an attempted draw AND after the hint button pops up. I fully admit, the majority of the guesses I win come from word mapping rather than the sketch. Once familiar with the word bank, the dashes and common letters are often enough to make the guess, which defeats the purpose of the game. |

at 9:42 AM, Thursday June 10, 2010 EDT First, Gurgi, I am a mod, and I am watching sketch every day, even if you don't see me. I read this every day, and get rid of or personally warn those who do wrong. I agree we need more because I am not a mod 24 hours a day. That has been taken care of, you just don't know it yet. =) As for the symbol thing? NO symbols. This has always meant NO symbols. An apple is a symbol for A. It's against the rules to do that. If you use a $ sign for the word dollar, against the rules. If you use a $ sign for something like diamond ring? Along with a picture of that ring? Not so much of an issue. You drew the ring. They don't get it. You drew a hand. Still don't get it. Ok, maybe a dollar sign will help them to see it's a diamond. You're showing that it's expensive, not replacing the answer with a symbol. You guys can debate this till you turn blue. There's always gonna be questions as to what's a symbol and what's not. There are so many different ways to draw things, and most of you are so good that you don't need any type of symbols..the ppl drawing AND the guessers are all good here. Give them a chance to guess your draw first. As for the dashes and parenthesis, etc..they are not against the rules, however as I said before, the ppl here are good. Give then a chance to guess your draw before doin all that. It IS afterall, a drawing game, not a word game. Make the dashes after you draw, if no one is getting it. You'll find the game will get much more interesting. So...for the sake of less confusion, I am here by saying that hieroglyphics for letters are officially not allowed. How's that. Don't go nuts gettin mad if someone draws a + or = or something like that. It will take awhile, and no need to go warn crazy. Definitely warm on the hiero. though. OK?
