Rules update

It has come to the attention of Buaka that the rules page is in direct contradiction to the way the game is played by the vast majority and that it is in need of an update.
Going over the existing rules (in reverse order); 2. You're not allowed to use nudity, violence, or hate symbols. No major issues with this, although perhaps avoiding "violence" may be an issue with war based words. Perhaps this could be tweaked a little. 1.You're not allowed to use letters, numbers or symbols. From speaking to various players it seems a general consensus on this; Letters = not OK Numbers = OK Symbols = depends on definition of symbols. I propose the following rules as a starting point. 1. Refrain from sketches which contain excessive nudity, violence or any hate symbols. 2. No letters are permitted except for the first letter of the first word AFTER the associated hint has been given in game. 3. Numbers are permitted as are symbols, but not where either are used as direct substitutions for letters. The following questions really need to be addressed to add further; - if you are able to freely write in dashes for letters / words what is the purpose of the number of letters hint? - are hieroglyphs an acceptable form of play? |

at 3:54 AM, Wednesday January 6, 2010 EST This is where it gets tricky, defining a fuzzy area where something is sometimes permitted and sometimes not.
I think rule 4 covers your views on the symbols fine? They are OK unlessed used to directly represent a letter ie as hieroglyphs. |

1. Xsketch is a game of sketches, please draw - don't write! 2. Refrain from sketches which contain excessive nudity, violence or any hate symbols. 3. No letters are permitted except for the first letter of the first word AFTER the associated hint has been given in game. 4. Numbers are permitted as are symbols, but not where either are used as direct substitutions for letters. 5. Drawing a picture for individual letters (AKA hieroglyphs) is not permitted. |

over this forum posting and possibly update the rules of the game and site. TCS |

at 11:38 AM, Thursday January 7, 2010 EST I saw a lot of shameful tactics by high rated players, and when I complained, their defense seemed to be that the moderators hadn't banned them so therefore it was acceptable
I'm referring specifically to - dashes for number of letters, then furthermore drawing connection lines under the dashes to show letters that are repeated - hieroglyphs Hieroglyphs are nothing more than ciphertext letters. My preference would be that the rules prohibit any clues that reveal an individual letter I disagree with TheCinders completely, that hieroglyphs should be available as a fallback. Hard words are good for the game; what's the harm if sometimes a word can't be drawn? If its some obsession with ratings and statistics that encourages players to cheat, maybe those are bad for the game themselves |

at 12:45 PM, Thursday January 7, 2010 EST Good point, Cinders. For newer players, I think we could tend to turn a "blind eye" to hieroglyphs as a last resort. However, the standard that we hold players to should be no-hieroglyphs.
By resorting to hieroglyphs as a last option, you avoid failing, which is an important part of learning. Oftentimes, people who fail ask "How could I have drawn that?" So, I suggest things. And when I fail, I ask! And we all become better players! =D |

at 9:06 AM, Monday January 25, 2010 EST In my opinion, dashes does not ruin the game. I find it's more fun to try to draw and knock myself out drawing it, eventho it's a hard word. I use dashes as a last resort, still, there is no harm in using dashes. The main problems are players using hieroglyphs and writing first letter for 2 words guess. For example, standing ovation, they'd write out s and d and considered it as "first letter".

at 3:39 AM, Thursday April 22, 2010 EDT Think this needs a gentle bump to the top, had an issue with a large number of new players joining today - warning more established players for use of the commonly accepted "dashes / first letter".
Clashes between the rules page and the rules that have been adopted by the community caused a bit of a fall out here. |

at 8:24 PM, Friday April 30, 2010 EDT Might I add, that maybe we should make it compulsory to pass a quiz on the rules before you can play? I dunno, but I think that would be a good idea. And all existing players should do it just to set an example.
Just throwing in my two cents. |
