Rules update

It has come to the attention of Buaka that the rules page is in direct contradiction to the way the game is played by the vast majority and that it is in need of an update.

Going over the existing rules (in reverse order);

2. You're not allowed to use nudity, violence, or hate symbols.

No major issues with this, although perhaps avoiding "violence" may be an issue with war based words. Perhaps this could be tweaked a little.

1.You're not allowed to use letters, numbers or symbols.
From speaking to various players it seems a general consensus on this;
Letters = not OK
Numbers = OK
Symbols = depends on definition of symbols.

I propose the following rules as a starting point.

1. Refrain from sketches which contain excessive nudity, violence or any hate symbols.

2. No letters are permitted except for the first letter of the first word AFTER the associated hint has been given in game.

3. Numbers are permitted as are symbols, but not where either are used as direct substitutions for letters.

The following questions really need to be addressed to add further;
- if you are able to freely write in dashes for letters / words what is the purpose of the number of letters hint?
- are hieroglyphs an acceptable form of play?

As I stated in a separate thread, I think the gameplay doesn't suffer without hieroglyphs. I agree that there are harder words, but that shouldn't mean hieroglyphs should come in.
That's just the randomness machine throwing bad luck at you, and it happens to all of us. In the long run, theoretically, we will all have passed enough words that we will have lost the same amount of points - more or less. I don't understand the obsession with getting the sketch right every time.

The use of hieroglyphs by veterans tell newcomers that it is ok to bend the rules and fill the sketchboard with apple snake snake fish umbrella cat to their heart's content. It should be avoided so the site doesn't turn into idiotville.

Pass and warn, pass and warn, and tell your kids to do the same.

Remember when it wasn't uncool to be on MySpace? Food for thought.

Perhaps our new mods may have more luck getting the text switched on the rules page.

Additionally I think enough time has expired to open up the floor to suggestions and amendments.

1. Xsketch is a game of sketches, please draw - don't write!

2. Refrain from sketches which contain excessive nudity, violence or any hate symbols.

3. No letters are permitted except for the first letter of the first word AFTER the associated hint has been given in game.

4. Numbers are permitted as are symbols, but not where either are used as direct substitutions for letters.

5. Drawing a picture for individual letters (AKA hieroglyphs) is not permitted.
